Eco-friendly pavers: what they are and when they make sense

An eco-friendly paver is a precast concrete unit laid as individual pieces on a sand bed, instead of being poured as a continuous slab, and its joints between units let water infiltrate into the ground. In Mexico it is regulated by NMX-C-314-ONNCCE-2014, in force since April 6, 2015. It makes the most sense where stormwater management matters, or where being able to replace individual units without breaking the whole surface is valuable.

What are eco-friendly pavers?

A paver is a modular precast concrete unit used to surface areas such as walkways, parking lots and some light-traffic streets. Unlike a concrete slab, which is poured as a single continuous element, pavers are manufactured at a plant under NMX-C-314-ONNCCE-2014 and installed piece by piece directly on site.

The concrete used to make pavers must use stone aggregate that meets NMX-C-111-ONNCCE-2018, the same standard governing sand and gravel for hydraulic concrete in general.

Being a precast unit, pavers go through plant quality control before leaving for the job site, unlike concrete poured on site, whose final quality depends on conditions on pour day. That difference in process is one reason pavers are specified on projects where consistent finish across repeated units matters, such as parking lots and walkways.

What makes a paver "eco-friendly" or permeable?

What sets a permeable paver apart from a continuous concrete pavement is the joint between units. On a poured slab, the surface is sealed from end to end: rainwater that lands on it has to run off toward a drain outlet. On a paver surface, by contrast, the joints between units — filled with fine sand — let part of the water pass through to the layers below and from there into the subsoil, instead of all of it running off across the top.

That behavior reduces the volume of water that hits the storm drain system all at once during heavy rain, which is why the material is marketed as "eco-friendly." The degree of permeability depends on the specific unit design and how it is installed; it is not an automatic property of every paver.

The same joint that lets water through also lets vegetation take root over time if joints are not maintained, and it means the surface is not perfectly flat the way a poured slab is. Neither is a defect in itself, but both are trade-offs worth weighing against the water-management benefit before choosing pavers over a continuous slab for a given area.

What advantages does it offer over a continuous concrete slab?

The main practical advantage of pavers is that they can be repaired in sections: if a unit is damaged, or the surface has to be opened to service an underground utility, only the necessary units are lifted and reset, without breaking up or repouring the whole surface as would be needed with a continuous slab.

A continuous slab, for its part, offers a joint-free surface that, for certain uses — where a fully smooth surface is needed, or where the project's traffic and loads call for it — can be the more suitable option. The choice between the two depends on how the surface will be used, how much stormwater management is wanted, and how easy the project needs maintenance to be, more than on a blanket preference.

How is it installed and what maintenance does it need?

Paver installation goes in layers, following the same logic as any pavement:

  • The base the pavers will sit on is prepared and compacted.
  • A leveled sand bed is spread over the base.
  • The paver units are laid in the chosen pattern, fitted tightly together.
  • A fine sand seal is applied, filling the joints between units and locking them in place.

Typical maintenance consists of topping up the sand seal in the joints as it wears down over time or with traffic, and replacing individual damaged units, without needing to work on the whole surface. Compared with a continuous slab, that localized repair is the most relevant day-to-day difference.

The quality of the base and the sand bed determines much of the pavement's performance over time: a poorly compacted base can cause uneven settling in the units, even if the paver itself meets the standard. That is why the installation — not just the unit — is part of what to check when contracting a paver project.
